GRST 223 Global Avant-Gardes: Experimental Art and Performance in a Global Context (3)

This course explores avant-garde art and its legacies in a global context from the early 20th century until today, with a specific emphasis on art that blurs the lines between artist and audience and art and political engagement and asks how art can create sites for resistance, subversion, and social change. The course begins with the historical avant-gardes and political theater in German-speaking Europe around 1900 but resituates these movements in a global context with an specific emphasis on experimental art and social change in the context of race and decolonization.
