FREN 431 The Middle Ages and the Renaissance in France (3)Study of the beginnings and development of the earliest forms of the novel: The Chansons de geste and Roman Courtois through Rabelais; the evolution of French lyrical poetry through La Pleiade; the growth of theatre from the drame religieux and farce through the birth of French tragedy; and the Humanist movement with an emphasis on Montaigne. Texts will be read in modern versions. Prerequisite(s): FREN 313 and FREN 314 , and one course from the following sequence FREN 320 , FREN 321 , or permission of the instructor.
