Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, M.S.

Navid Hashemi, Program Director

Mission Statement

The Mission of the College of Charleston’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science degree program is to fill the growing demand for graduates with artificial intelligence, data-driven, quantitative, analytics, and computing skills - i.e., data scientists and AI professionals.

Program Description

There are several overlapping but distinct ways to identify and define data scientists and AI professionals. At the heart of artificial intelligence and data science is the goal of knowledge discovery and data-driven intelligent decision-making. This requires a core set of specialized skills from the domains of computer science and mathematics, complemented by meaningful exposure to a domain of specialization (e.g., business, healthcare, natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering).

Graduates of this degree program will develop advanced skills in Data Modeling, Data Wrangling, Experimental Design, Statistics, Optimization, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Visualization. These foundational skills are strengthened through domain-specific elective coursework that allows students to apply AI and data science methods across diverse disciplines. Recommended elective pathways prepare students for careers in AI and Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, Computational Data Science, Scientific Computing, Software Engineering, and Business Analytics. All students in the program will further apply their technical and interdisciplinary knowledge through either an industry practicum or a research thesis experience.

The specific learning objectives of the program are:

  1. Graduates will demonstrate advanced and applied knowledge of computer programming, data organization, data mining, data visualization, and algorithms.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate an advanced understanding in the core area of mathematics and statistics, including optimization, machine learning, regression, and linear algebra.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate an application of their AI and data science graduate coursework through the completion of a Practicum Experience or Research Thesis.
