History, Public History Concentration, M.A.

Program Requirements


  • 33 credit hours
  • At least 11 credit hours at each institution
  • Students opting to add a concentration in Public History must meet all the normal requirements for the master’s degree. In fulfilling these requirements, they must complete the course of study below and all courses chosen must meet the approval of the graduate program director.

Required Courses


Research Seminar Requirement


Complete one research seminar. Research seminar coursework can be used to satisfy an Area of Distribution requirement or an elective requirement.

Complete 21 credit hours of distribution coursework


Primary Area of Distribution: Complete 12 credit hours from one of the following areas of distribution.

Secondary Area of Distribution: Complete 6 credit hours from one of the following areas of distribution.  Coursework must be taken outside of the Primary Area of Distribution.

Third Area of Distribution: Complete 3 credit hours from one of the following areas of distribution.  Coursework must be taken outside of the Primary Area of Distribution and Secondary Area of Distribution.

Thesis or Comprehensive Exam


Complete either Option 1 or Option 2, both of which should be taken within the primary area of distribution. Students pursuing the Public History Concentration must complete the Thesis option.

Thesis Option Elective Requirement

Complete 3 additional credit hours of electives. The elective may be selected from any of the above distribution areas.

Option 2: Comprehensive Exam


Comprehensive Exam Option Elective Requirement

Complete 6 additional credit hours of electives. The elective may be selected from any of the above distribution areas.

African American Emphasis


Students whose primary or secondary emphasis area within US history may opt to include a focus on African American history. Students pursuing this option must, within the US emphasis area, complete the following requirements.

Concentration in Public History


Introduction to Public History (3 credits)


Thesis (6 credits)


Students enrolled in the Public History Concentration must complete a public history-oriented thesis.
