International Studies Shared Core Requirements
Note:
Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 173 in lieu of INTL 100 . Complete 3 credit hours from each of the following two categories:
Category I: 100-level Global Thinking Course
Note:
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 118 in lieu of HIST 118 .
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 127 in lieu of HIST 116 .
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 166 in lieu of POLI 103 .
Category II: 200-level Global Thinking Course
Study Abroad Requirement
All International Studies majors are required to spend one semester or summer in a study or internship abroad program approved by the program and earn a minimum of 6 credit hours with the provision for an alternative or exemption on the basis of special circumstances. General Courses
Special topics courses may be used to fulfill concentration electives. Check with your advisor when these courses are offered. Independent Study and Bachelor’s Essay may be available for your concentration - check with your advisor. 300-Level Credit Requirement
International Studies majors must take a minimum of 12 credit hours at the 300-level or above in the International Studies major. These credits must include INTL 350 , INTL 495 , and at least two courses in their chosen concentration(s). Asia Concentration 18+ credit hours)
The Asia Concentration in International Studies requires completion of 18 credit hours including a core of 3 credit hours, and 15 credit hours of electives chosen from History and Politics and Art, Literature and Culture categories with at least 3 credit hours in each of three disciplines.
Core Course (3 credit hours):
Complete 3 credit hours from the following: Electives (15 additional Credit Hours):
Complete 9 credit hours from one of the two categories and 6 credit hours from the other - I: History and Politics category and II: Art, Literature, and Culture category- to include at least 3 credit hours in each of the two categories at the 300- level or above. No more than 3 credit hours at the 100-level may be counted towards the Electives requirements.
Category I: History and Politics
Note:
* Course counts towards the Electives when at least 1/3 of the course content is related to Asia as determined by the Director of the International Studies Program.
Category II: Art, Literature, and Culture
Foreign Language Requirement:
Complete one of the following options: a) 102-level (or the equivalent) in an Asian language and an additional 12 credit hours (or the equivalent) in one related non-Asian language that is regionally and/or historically significant to the Asia concentration; b) the 202-level or above (or the equivalent) in an Asian language and 102-level or above (or the equivalent) in one other Asian language or in one related non-Asian language that is regionally and/or historically significant to the Asia concentration; c) six credit hours (or the equivalent) at the 300-level or above in an Asian language. Asian languages include Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, and Japanese. Related languages include French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
Notes:
- Other Departmental and Program topics, special topics, selected topics, research seminars, tutorials, independent study, and bachelor’s essay courses will also be counted when their content is 1/3 focused on the Asia region as determined by the director of International Studies.
- Students are not permitted to major in International Studies with a concentration in Asia and minor in Asian Studies.
- No more than 6 credit hours from INTL 350 may be applied towards the program requirements.
Coursework Meeting Major Requirements Excluded from the Major GPA Calculation
No foreign language courses unless specifically included within the requirements listed above. |
