Program Requirements

Semester I (Core Semester) (15 credit hours)


Documentation and Analysis: A semester of “core” curriculum in historic preservation that revolves around developing a deeper understanding of the historic architectural fabric through a connected series of NCPE-mandated courses.

Semester II (Implementation Semester) (15 credit hours)


An advanced semester that focuses on acquiring advanced skills in digital recording, pursuing a preservation project through a studio, investigating and analyzing cultural landscapes and broader assemblages of historic resources as well as a conservation laboratory science class.

Internship in Historic Preservation (3 credit hours)


Internship in Historic Preservation, typically completed in the summer: A required internship secured through a variety of organizations and foundations, including the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) and the Historic American Engineering Survey (HAES), the International Committee on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the National Trust, and local museums and foundations as well as preservation practitioners in America and Europe.

Semester III (Intervention Semester) (15 credit hours)


Intervention: A semester focusing on implementation and intervention. At this point in the curriculum, students begin their theses and pursue areas of emphasis based on selection of electives.

Semester IV (Thesis Semester) (12 credit hours)


Thesis: A final semester during which the focus is on completion of the thesis with additional opportunities to pursue elective courses related to career goals.

Transfer Credit Policy

The MSHP program does not allow automatic transfer of graduate credit. Students with graduate credit earned at another institution, in another department at the College of Charleston or Clemson University, or earned before admission to this program must have prior work evaluated for transfer credit. Requests for transfer credit to the program must be recommended and approved by the Program Director or the Dean of the Graduate School. You must make your request in writing for each course or credited activity to be transferred. Each request must be accompanied by an official transcript, catalog description and syllabus or other supporting documentation.
