CLAS 215 Slavery and Racism in Greece and Rome (3)

This course studies the institution of slavery and the concepts of race and racism in ancient Greece and Rome, and their legacy in the modern world. In addition to examining the influence of classical ideals on early modern slavery, we will also learn the story of how formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants have helped and continue to help shape the field of Classics today. We will look at both antiquity and modernity from multiple perspectives, using archaeological, historical, literary, and philosophical sources.
