About the Department
The major in art and architectural history offers diverse educational experiences in the history of art and culture of Western civilizations, as well as those of Asia and the Americas. Courses in architectural history and historic preservation & community planning are available for students interested in architecture and urban design.
The department strongly supports study abroad programs that enable students to experience firsthand the art, architecture, and urban environments they have studied.
Through a sequence of self-selected courses students sharpen their skills in visual analysis and develop advanced skills in oral and written expression, thereby preparing students for any future career in our increasingly visually-oriented contemporary world.
Our graduates have completed advanced degrees in art history and historic preservation, secured positions in major museums and found fulfilling careers in a variety of areas, such as gallery curatorships, teaching, medicine and architecture, among others.
