Mission Statement

Program Mission Statement

The Graduate Certificate Program in Statistics allows non-degree students to strengthen their expertise in applied statistics while recognizing them with an official certificate of their achievement. The Program combines a solid theoretical foundation with a variety of applied tools and techniques to prepare the student to handle statistical problems in business and industry.
Program Goals

G1. Provide the theoretical background and applied statistical techniques needed to work as a practicing statistician in business and industry.

G2. Develop the skills necessary to communicate statistical ideas clearly and effectively.

G3. Develop the ability to use the latest computational statistical software.

G4. Provide a variety of project opportunities in applied and theoretical statistics.

Program Description

The program combines a solid theoretical foundation with a variety of applied tools and techniques to prepare the student to handle statistical problems in business and industry.

Admission Requirements and Application Deadlines



Institutional Admissions Requirements


  • A completed application form with a nonrefundable application fee of $60.
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework. An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • International applicants should refer to the International Students area within the “Admissions Information”  section of the catalog for information on providing appropriate documentation with the application.

Program Admissions Requirements


  • A minimum GPA of 3.000 in mathematics courses.
  • Two letters of recommendation from former professors or immediate superiors in recent employment.
  • Completion of an undergraduate calculus sequence up to and including multivariable calculus, linear algebra and an undergraduate statistics course. Students may be admitted provisionally if they have had all of the listed courses above but are lacking Linear Algebra. Their provisional status will be waived after they have completed this course with a grade of B or better.

* A separate degree-seeking application is required for admittance to a master’s degree program at the College of Charleston; Admission to the certificate program does not imply acceptance to a master’s program.

Application Deadlines


  • Fall: January 15, priority; July 1, final
  • Spring: November 1, priority; December 1, final
  • Summer: January 15, priority; April 1, final

 

Time Limit Requirements

All work credited toward the Graduate Certificate in Statistics must be completed within three years.

Transfer Credit Policy

The Statistics Graduate Certificate does not accept graduate transfer credit from another institution.
