International Studies, Latin America and the Caribbean Concentration, B.A.


Major Requirements


Credit Hours: 36+

In addition to completing the requirements for this major, students must also complete the degree requirements specified in the Academic Regulations  section of this catalog.

Courses within this major may also satisfy general education requirements. Please consult the Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements  for more information.

Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 173  in lieu of INTL 100 .

Study Abroad Requirement


All International Studies majors are required to spend one semester or summer in a study or internship abroad program approved by the program and earn a minimum of 6 credit hours with the provision for an alternative or exemption on the basis of special circumstances.

General Courses


Special topics courses may be used to fulfill concentration electives. Check with your advisor when these courses are offered. Independent Study and Bachelor’s Essay may be available for your concentration - check with your advisor.

300-Level Credit Requirement


International Studies majors must take a minimum of 12 credit hours at the 300-level or above in the International Studies major. These credits must include INTL 350 , INTL 495 , and at least two courses in their chosen concentration(s).

Latin America and the Caribbean Concentration (18+ credit hours)


The Latin America and the Caribbean Concentration in International Studies requires completion of 18 credit hours including a 3 credit hour core course, and 15 credit hours of electives chosen from the History and Politics and Literature, Film and Culture categories with at least 3 credit hours in each of three disciplines.

Electives (15 Credit Hours):


Complete 9 credit hours from one of the two categories and 6 credit hours from the other - History and Politics category and Literature, Film, and Culture category- to include at least 3 credit hours in each of the two categories at the 300- level or above.

Note:

*Courses marked with an asterisk are taught in that language.

**SPAN 333  will count for the Latin America and the Caribbean Concentration only when the topic of the class is Latin America and the Caribbean.

*** Course counts towards the Electives when at least 1/3 of the course content is related to Latin America and the Caribbean as determined by the Director of the International Studies Program.

Foreign language Requirement:


Complete 202 (or the equivalent) in Spanish, French or Portuguese language and plus an additional 6 credit hours (or the equivalent) in the same or an additional 6 credit hours (or the equivalent) in one of the respective two other languages  or an additional 6 credit hours (or the equivalent) in a related language as determined by the Director of the International Studies Program. Language courses focused on Latin America and the Caribbean above the 200-level may double count for the major and Foreign Language Requirement.

Course Restriction


While double majoring in Latin America & Caribbean Studies and International Studies with a Latin America and Caribbean concentration is not recommended by the International Studies faculty, students who do so may double count four 100 level courses only.

Notes:


  • Other Departmental and Program topics, special topics, selected topics, research seminars, tutorials, independent study, and bachelor’s essay courses will also be counted when their content is 1/3 focused on the Latin American and/or Caribbean region as determined by the director of International Studies.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from INTL 350  may be applied towards the program requirements.

Coursework Meeting Major Requirements Excluded from the Major GPA Calculation


No foreign language courses unless specifically included within the requirements listed above.
