Major Requirements


Credit Hours: 33+

In addition to completing the requirements for this major, students must also complete the degree requirements specified in the Academic Regulations  section of this catalog.

Courses within this major may also satisfy general education requirements. Please consult the Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements  for more information.

Note:


Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 174  in lieu of WGST 200 .

Experiential Learning


Students choose a minimum of one of the following experiential learning programs or courses to complete this requirement:

* Students who have completed the Experiential Learning requirement via an approved study abroad experience (versus a credit earning course) will also need to complete an additional 3 credit hours selected from among the courses listed below to reach the required hours in the major.

Complete 6 credit hours from each of the following two categories:


Social and Behavioral Sciences:


These courses from disciplines including psychology, sociology, political science, anthropology, communication emphasize explanatory and descriptive theories and applications of human behavior, institutions and social systems. These classes emphasize how gender, as a construct both intersects with other constructs and is impacted by the social environment.

Arts and Humanities:


These courses focus on human creative constructions in the arts, philosophy, literature, religion and history. These classes consider questions concerning gendered representations, places, and identities.

  • Certain Special Topics courses from the various departments may also be counted toward the major requirements. Please consult the instructor or the director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 120  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 250   may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 21 credit hours from WGST 320  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 328  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 338  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 381  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 400  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 6 credit hours from WGST 420  may be applied towards the program requirements.

Coursework Meeting Major Requirements Excluded from the Major GPA Calculation


None.  All courses that may apply toward completion of course requirements within the major apply toward the major GPA calculation.
