Program Requirements


  • Credit Hours: 30
  • At least 10 credit hours at each institution


Electives


Students who choose the thesis (ENGL 701 ) for the Capstone requirement must complete at least 15 additional credit hours from the following courses or courses listed within the distributional areas (Literature Before 1800, Literature After 1800). Those who choose the ePortfolio Tutorial (ENGL 709 ) or the Revising for Academic Publication (ENGL 710 ) for the Capstone must complete at least 18 additional credit hours from the following courses or courses listed within the distributional areas (Literature Before 1800, Literature After 1800). Any course listed within those areas will count as an elective after the credit requirements for that area have been fulfilled.

Note:


A maximum of 9 credit hours are allowed from ENGL 698 , ENGL 699 , ENGL 701 , ENGL 702 , ENGL 709 , and ENGL 710 

Capstone Requirement


All MA students must complete one of the following capstone options: 

  • ENGL 701  : Thesis. A 6-credit individual enrollment course overseen by a graduate faculty member of student’s choosing along with 2 additional readers (one from each of the joint institutions). The final thesis must be approved by the thesis committee, which includes the director and 2 additional readers. 
  • ENGL 709 : ePortfolio Tutorial. A 3-credit tutorial course in which students revise and adapt three prior seminar papers in genres that align with academic, pedagogical, and/or public-facing discourse. The ePortfolio will be introduced by a reflective essay that articulates the generic and thematic choices made. Overseen by one of the joint MA program directors. The final portfolio must be approved by a majority of the MA Joint Committee members. 
  • ENGL 710 : Revising for Academic Publication. A 3-credit individual-enrollment course focusing on major expansion and revision of a seminar paper into an article suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Overseen by a graduate faculty member of student’s choosing. 

Students will need to submit a capstone proposal describing the personal and professional motivations behind their capstone choice to the program director by week 12 of the semester prior to the start of the relevant individual enrollment course.  For ENGL 701  and ENGL 710  students will also submit a formal 1-page proposal and working bibliography according to the guidelines published on the joint program website.  

Transfer Credit Policy


An applicant or student of the M.A. in English program can seek approval from the Joint Program Committee to accept up to 12 transfer credit hours. These courses must have a grade of B or higher, and can count toward the M.A. in English degree requirements. Courses with a grade of “Pass” or “Satisfactory” will not be accepted.
