International Studies Shared Core Requirements
Note:
Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 173 in lieu of INTL 100 . Complete 3 credit hours from each of the following two categories:
Category I: 100-level Global Thinking Course
Note:
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 118 in lieu of HIST 118 .
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 127 in lieu of HIST 116 .
- Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 166 in lieu of POLI 103 .
Category II: 200-level Global Thinking Course
Study Abroad Requirement
All International Studies majors are required to spend one semester or summer in a study or internship abroad program approved by the department and earn a minimum of 6 credit hours with the provision for an alternative or exemption on the basis of special circumstances.
General Courses
Special topics courses may be used to fulfill concentration electives. Check with your advisor when these courses are offered. Independent Study and Bachelor’s Essay may be available for your concentration - check with your advisor. 300-Level Credit Requirement
International Studies majors must take a minimum of 12 credit hours at the 300-level or above in the International Studies major. These credits must include INTL 350 , INTL 495 , and at least two courses in their chosen concentration(s). Europe Concentration (18+ credit hours)
The Europe Concentration requires completion of 18 credit hours including a 3 credit hour core course, and 15 credit hours of electives chosen from Category I: History, Politics, Ideas and Economics and Category II: Art, Literature, and Culture. Students must complete at least 3 credit hours in each of three disciplines. Core Course (3 credit hours):
Electives (15 credit hours)
Complete 9 credit hours from one of the two categories and 6 credit hours from the other - Category I: History, Politics, Ideas and Economics and Category II: Art, Literature, and Culture. Electives must include at least 3 credit hours in each of the two categories at the 300- level or above. No more than 3 credit hours at the 100-level may be counted towards the Electives requirement.

*Course counts towards the Electives when at least 1/3 of the course content is related to Europe as determined by the Chair of the International Studies Department.
Category II: Art, Literature, and Culture
Note:
*Course counts towards the Electives when at least 1/3 of the course content is related to Europe as determined by the Chair of the International Studies Department.
Foreign Language Requirement:
Complete 202-level (or the equivalent) in one foreign language and an additional 6 credit hours in the same or a different foreign language (or the equivalent). Approved languages for the Europe concentration include French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Other languages can fulfill the requirement subject to approval by the Chair of the International Studies Department. Notes:
- Language courses, such as French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, are taught in the respective language.
- Other Departmental and Program topics, special topics, selected topics, research seminars, tutorials, independent study, and bachelor’s essay courses will also be counted when their content is 1/3 focused on the Europe region as determined by the Chair of the International Studies Department.
Coursework Meeting Major Requirements Excluded from the Major GPA Calculation
No foreign language courses unless specifically included within the requirements listed above. |
