Mission Statement
Our mission is to prepare educators to work with multilingual learners (MLs) in both local and global instructional settings. CofC’s MAT in ML Education looks to cultivate professional expertise that inspires academic success for all students.
Program Description
The Master of Arts in Teaching in Multilingual Learner (ML) Education is an online program (39 credit hours). In addition to the online coursework, students complete 75 hours of supervised field experience prior to the semester-long clinical practicum internship in designated PK-12 schools. Graduates earn a master’s degree and receive a recommendation for ML teaching licensure for grades PK-12. Our comprehensive curriculum covers essential topics:
- Educational Foundations: Gain a deep understanding of teaching, learning, and second-language development.
- Advanced Coursework: Master strategies for teaching multilingual learners, assess their progress, and foster language acquisition.
- Read to Succeed: Integrate literacy theory and practice into your teaching, aligned with state requirements.
- Culminating Professional Experiences: Take on full-time teaching responsibilities under expert supervision, gaining invaluable classroom experience.
Admission Requirements and Application Deadlines
Institutional Admissions Requirements
- A completed application form with a nonrefundable application fee of $60.
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework. An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
- International applicants should refer to the International Students area within the “Admissions Information” section of the catalog for information on providing appropriate documentation with the application.
Program Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in non-education discipline
- Official transcripts for all previous coursework; GPA > 2.75
- Professional résumé
- Purpose statement, describing the candidate’s interest in pursuing the MAT in ML education program and a career in teaching
- Graduate Recommendation Form (in lieu of letters of recommendation)
- Language Proficiency Assessment, e.g., TOEFL or Duolingo scores (if applicable)
Application Deadlines
- Fall: January 15, priority*; July 1, final
- Spring: November 1, priority; December 1, final
- Summer: January 15, priority; April 1, final
*Candidates who submit a completed application by the priority deadline will automatically be considered for Graduate School and/or graduate program funding.
