Geology, Paleontology Concentration, B.S.

Major Requirements


Credit Hours: 71+

In addition to completing the requirements for this major, students must also complete the degree requirements specified in the Academic Regulations  section of this catalog.

Courses within this major may also satisfy general education requirements. Please consult the Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements  for more information.

Geology Electives


Complete 9 additional credit hours of GEOL 200-level or above coursework with at least 6 credit hours at the 250-level or above with a maximum of 3 credit hours from ASTR 260 ASTR 260L ASTR 460L PHYS 260 PHYS 260L PHYS 460L GEOL 260 GEOL 260L , and GEOL 460L. 

Note:


Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 190 /HONS 190L  in lieu of CHEM 111 /CHEM 111L  and CHEM 112 /CHEM 112L .

Biology or Physics Sequence Requirement (8 credit hours)


Complete one of the following options:

Paleontology students must complete a biology option to satisfy the concentration’s introductory biology requirement.

Notes:


  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 115  in lieu of MATH 120 .
  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 215  in lieu of MATH 220 .
  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 217  in lieu of MATH 250 .

Notes:


  • Students are not permitted to double major in Environmental Geosciences and Geology.
  • No more than 9 credit hours from GEOL 240  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 4 credit hours from GEOL 385  may be applied towards the program requirements.
  • No more than 3 credit hours from GEOL 399  may be applied towards the program requirements.

Paleontology Concentration


Concentration Internship Requirement


Complete 1 credit hour of GEOL 385 Internship  on a museology project arranged with CofC faculty and involving the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History.  Prior written approval must be obtained from the coordinator of the Paleontology concentration.

Concentration Field Studies Requirement


Students pursuing a B.S. in Geology are required to complete GEOL 366 Field Studies: Geology and Paleontology (4) .

*Must be paleontology related and conducted under the mentorship of a geosciences faculty member from CofC. Prior written approval must be obtained from the coordinator of the Paleontology concentration.
