Major Requirements


Credit Hours: 66+

In addition to completing the requirements for this major, students must also complete the degree requirements specified in the Academic Regulations  section of this catalog.

Courses within this major may also satisfy general education requirements. Please consult the Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements  for more information.

Elementary Education Program


  • Declare a major in education using Program of Study Management (POSM) in MyPortal as soon as possible. You will be assigned a faculty advisor to work with you in planning your program.
  • You should apply for admission (this is NOT declaring your major) to the Teacher Education Program the semester you are enrolled in EDFS 201 Foundations of Education . Requirements for admission:
    • Minimum overall GPA of 2.750 and 60 earned credit hours.
    • Passing scores on Praxis Core: Academic Skills for Educators designated by the South Carolina Department of Education OR qualifying SAT or ACT scores. Scores must be sent to the College of Charleston (Code R5113) and the SCDE (Code R8108).
    • Completing the application process during EDFS 201 .
    • If a student has transfer credit for a course that is equivalent to EDFS 201 , they must meet with the Teacher Education department chair and complete 1 hour of work.
    • A grade of C or higher in EDFS 201 Foundations of Education .
  • Your admission process must be completed before taking EDEE 457 .
  • Candidates interested in add on licensure (e.g., elementary and early childhood, elementary and middle) must major in one area and meet with the Intake Specialist in the OSSC to discover the appropriate Semester II courses required in the additional licensure area.

Note:


  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 115  in lieu of MATH 120 .
  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 215  in lieu of MATH 220 .
  • Honors students can take the alternative course of HONS 217  in lieu of MATH 250 .
  • Declared students with approved math alternatives may satisfy this requirement by taking two approved general education math alternative courses.

Note:


*Students seeking recommendation for South Carolina licensure in Elementary Education must complete the program of study above and meet the admission, retention, and exit requirements of the program and the School of Education . Recommendation to the South Carolina Department of Education for licensure in South Carolina is contingent upon successful completion of Clinical Practice and achievement of passing scores on the necessary Praxis II test(s). Students must earn a grade C or higher in the following courses:EDEE 425 EDEE 435 EDEE 445 EDEE 495 .Students who do not take Clinical Practice may earn a degree in Elementary Education but will not be recommended for licensure. See your faculty advisor for additional information.

Coursework Meeting Major Requirements Excluded from the Major GPA Calculation


The following courses are excluded: EDEE 457 , HONS 115 , HONS 215 , HONS 217 , MATH 103 , MATH 104 , MATH 111 , MATH 116 , MATH 120 , MATH 207 , MATH 220 , MATH 229 , MATH 250,  or approved general elective education math alternative course.
